Hot Pants for Fall

August 29, 2010

This was one of the first articles I ever wrote for Couture back in late May. However, since fall and chilly weather are rapidly approaching, I thought this would be an approriate piece, especially for everyone who is in the market for new jeans. After re reading this, I realized that I’m totally OBSESSED with J Brand, but sadly, the Houlihan pants don’t looke quite right on me.

Denim jeans will always be a wardrobe essential, and this fall denim will be everywhere. Even Huggie’s Diapers is getting in on this trend with their new denim diapers. It’s no surprise that denim sales have increased 6.2% this year despite the economic recession. Jeans are all over the runways for fall, and skinny jeans and premium denim lines are on trend and will easily create classic looks.

Women’s Wear Daily says that skinny jeans and jean leggings or “jeggings” are here to stay. Skinny jeans are adding various details and embellishments like boyfriend style, cargo pockets and zippers, colored jeans, pleats, studs, and crystals. These whimsical details mean that skinny jeans will no longer all look like carbon copies of each other. Genetic Denim has an amazing fall look book with a spectacular pair of grey floral print skinny jeans, while J Brand makes an adorable pair of skinny denim cargos, the  “Houlihan skinny cargo” ($231). You can find any kind of denim detail you desire this fall either on denim skinny jeans or jeggings.

Premium denim lines will only continue to grow in popularity. This fall, two of the hottest runway designers are pairing up with premium denim brands. Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler are designing a collection for J Brand Jeans. Italian fashion house Marni has teamed up with the must-have Hollywood jean brand Current/Elliot. These two new collaborations will bring in some avant-garde jeans that will become the statement piece of any outfit.  The Proenza Schouler and J Brand graffiti print denim is a highlight of the collection and is sure to inspire many copycats and knockoffs. The Marni and Current/Elliot collection takes Current/Elliot’s signature slouchy boyfriend jeans and pairs them with Marni’s quirky touches.

As for shades and washes, this fall is all about contrast. The classic dark indigo shade is hip for fall, as well as a light blue denim shade. If you are an uber trendy fashionista, try some jeans with some few well-placed patches (not patchwork!) or a tie-dye wash.

As long as you are rocking skinny jeans or leggings with fall’s trendy new focus on detail, you will look marvelous. This season’s denim is moving away from being a wardrobe essential and is turning into the focal point of many ensembles.
